International SEO is the process of optimising your website and content on a global scale – ie. if you have a business with global reach or are looking to expand and target countries outside of your companies’ home.
It’s not quite as easy as simply serving your website in multiple different languages however, and generally it will require a huge amount of market research when compared to its local counterpart. Global visibility takes time, and no small part of effort. And realistically, if you’re looking to fully commit to a global strategy, you would require multiple separate websites for each country you wish to target.
But, with an effective international SEO plan, even a small business can see a fantastic ROI further down the line.

Global visibility is the aim of the game, but in truth you have to start smaller. Almost every business with international expansion in mind will end up conducting some form of market research, but if you’re looking for an SEO sign that you should be looking to expand, it might be that you receive a spike in organic traffic from a foreign market, or indeed a spike in users from a particular country.
Then, you can start to look at local keyword research relevant to this new location – for example, which local keywords are driving this spike in traffic? And are these keywords relevant to your lead generating content? If the answer is yes, it’s time to think about International SEO.
