What Is Backlinking?
Backlinking is the practice of adding links to your website from other websites. By doing this, you’ll improve your domain rating and start to optimise your website for search engines such as Google.
There are many different ways to backlinks, from adding a link to your website to directories such as Yell to asking websites in your sector to let you write a news article or blog post for them. Either way, it is important to remember that the higher the domain authority of the website, the more difficult it usually is to get a backlink from them.
Whilst adding new backlinks to your website is very important, it is also very important to disavow any backlinks you find that are from poor quality websites. In this blog post, we’ll walk you through the most simple way to disavow poor quality backlinks.
Disavowing Your Backlinks
As I mentioned briefly, the first step to disavowing poor quality backlinks is to identify where there are any. For this, you can use a variety of tools and systems. Two of our favourites are Ahrefs or Agency Analytics, although you can use whichever service suits you better.
Once you have identified all of your backlinks, it is time to pick out the ones you would like to remove. These will be directed from very poor quality websites, and it’ll usually be pretty obvious when this happens. You should make a list of the URLs to the websites you would like to remove.
Remember, there’s no need to add more than one URL from the same website to your list; disavowing one link from a website will automatically disavow all of them.
Next, it is time to upload your list to Google Search Console. This website is designed to help you organise almost every aspect of your website, and is a great help! To find out more about Google Search Console, you can read our blog post on the topic.
It typically takes around a month for Google to index the disavowed backlinks properly, so you’ll need to give it some time! After Google sees that you have done this, however, it will begin to consider your website to be of a higher quality.
Search Engine Optimisation
Backlinking is one aspect of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). This strategy helps search engines such as Google to see your website as being positive. And if search engines think your website is positive, they’ll rank it more highly!
First and foremost, search engines decide the quality of your website through the content you are creating. As well as this, the technical quality of your website is assessed by ‘crawlers’. Because of this, you’ll need to make sure aspects of your website such as alt tags and meta descriptions are properly deployed.
And then comes backlinking. Collecting good quality backlinks, and disavowing low-quality ones, will make sure search engine ‘crawlers’ see that your website should be indexed very well.
